I spent a large portion of my consultation yesterdy sorting through tea dyed quilts! The appointment was to present decorating ideas for two teen girls’ log cabin style bedroom at a mountain hunting lodge. The view alone was (almost) enough to make me tear up my invoice!

The vacation home had been in the family for decades if the style of the log home and the number of trophy deer and moose displayed on the walls was any indication. I have never visited this client’s town home so I’m not privy to the details of the decor they had in place in their primary residence but this rustic cabin was filled with traditional mementoes of ancestors including the tea dyed quilts that I mentioned.

Knowing ahead of time that I would be decorating the log cabin theme bedroom, I pulled out pictures of rustic bedding and bedrooms that I had decorated with bedding sets and room decorations in warm shades of brown, rust and hunter green. I could tell that the girls and their mom liked my rustic decorating ideas and sure enough I got the job.

At the close of the consultation, I commented on how lovely their hunting cabin was already and the lady said that her mother used to quilt to pass the time while the men were hunting and opened up an old fashioned trunk filled with tea dyed postage stamp quilts, pinwheel quilts and plain old patchwork quilts that were absolutely stunning.

My plans are to incorporate these beautiful quilts and use them as either part of my log cabin bedroom’s bedding or as room decorations. The tea dyed quilts are simply too beautiful to be kept in a trunk so check back to see their new location!

I’m running behind in decorating a friend’s log cabin. She requested unique, rustic bedroom decor to be specific so I felt that I needed something stunning on my design board when I made my presentation. This is not my usual project where the owner picks a theme and we proceed to decorate the bedroom using the existing furniture.

In this project, I am being given the privilege to buy all new rustic bedroom furniture
as well as the bedding and decorations. I was so excited at the prospect that I underestimated the challenges of rustic bedroom design that will blend seamlessly with the adjoining rooms in the
log cabin
. Maybe I never appreciated the fact that the bones were in place when I remodel a room rather than design it from scratch. I vowed early on in my struggles to complete this project to never take those whispers of clues on appropriate colors and style given to me from the existing furnishings for granted ever again.

Then I hit pay dirt. Call it the mother lode of rustic bedroom decor if you will. After cruising through magazines with pictures upon pictures of rustic bedroom designs filled with the same old knotty pine log bedroom furniture I happened on the most fantastic cedar beds. These are not those mass produced red cedar beds that you find in furniture stores; these were rustic bed frames with canopies of twisted limbs that seemed to have grown that way of their own accord over a wide king size mattress. A fitting foundation for the bedding set in my rustic bedroom decor.

I can only imagine that the person lucky enough to sleep in that beautiful, rustic bed would feel they were spending a peaceful night beneath a canopy of trees. I found the beautifully crafted bedroom furniture inspiring and I hope the homeowner will be equally impressed. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that she will order an entire set of rustic bedroom furniture to match and make my job easier so that I progress to the stage that I’m more comfortable with; finding the perfect decorative accessories and rustic bedding sets covered in deer, bear and moose for the cabin.

RUSTIC BEDDING - LOG CABIN AND MOUNTAIN LODGE DECOR

It’s true that rustic bedding sets are always stylish in certain types of home decor such as log cabins and mountain hideaways. However, fall weather or the sighting of the first flake of snow expands their popularity far beyond their normal realm. Toasty warm, wool blankets with pictures of moose in print or woven into the very fabric make facing the hardships of winter seem much more manageable than they may have been with less attractive means of preserving warmth.

RUSTIC BEDDING CHARACTERISTICS

Many believe the term rustic to mean rough and indeed that may be an acceptable definition in every application other than log cabin or lodge style bedding and comforter sets. In this style of decor soft flannels, patchwork quilts and heavy wool blankets rule the roost. Contrary to popular opinion high end wool is not scratchy. Unless you have sensitivity to this natural fiber, modern wool fabrics should not irritate your sensitive skin except in the case of log cabin or rustic bedding for a baby's moose, bear or hunting nursery theme.

COLORS

Deep forest green and red buffalo plaid blankets are favorite layering options in the overall scheme of rustic bedding as are worn, homemade patchwork quilts. If you have no special affinity for plaid prints,
rustic bedding with snowflakes, moose silhouettes, outlines of bears and bear paw prints will work equally as well with log cabin or lodge style decorations.

Rustic cabin bedding has come a long way from the skins of wild animals or whatever insulating material a mountaineer might have at hand. Rustic bedding, like humanity it seems, has gone soft. Even fashion designers like Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan have jumped on board with their own lines of hunting lodge style comforters and bedding for girls. I’m not sure if there is such a thing as a pure, rustic bedding collection on the market these days, but the comforters and bedding that are labeled as rustic will be right at home in most any bedroom.
