The Max Weinberg Experience (with Mindy Abair)

It took the Regular Son to Summerfest last night to hear Bruce Springsteen's drummer, Max Weinberg, and his band.   It was great.... fantastic musicians playing classic 1960s and 1970s R&B songs.   The main singer was Bill Champlin of Chicago, but the hit of the show was Mindy Abair, a jazz saxaphonist, who is tall and blonde and, well, you get the picture.   The only downside was the sparse crowd, probably under 500 people... good music and great musicians apparently aren't enough... if you're not the latest hip thing, or else a big name, you can't draw, I guess.   But it was a really fun show, and the Regular Son liked it, so that's all that matters.

Here is Mindy Abair from 2008 with a different group, but it gives you the flavor of what we saw last night.

Time Horizons

We worry about tomorrow's tasks.  We worry about our children completing this year's grade, or doing well in this sport's season.   We imagine our lives only so far forward; perhaps next year; perhaps only until the end of summer.   Perhaps, if of a political bent, we think about the 2012 elections, and imagine that event to be the be-all-and-end-all.   Perhaps we think of our "careers," a span of a few decades.

Pope Benedict XVI has a different time horizon:  eternity.   Today was his 60th anniversary as a priest, and his homily captures the scale and stakes of what he worries about and focuses on (and what we should worry about and focus on):
I know that forgiveness comes at a price: In his Passion [Jesus] went deep down into the sordid darkness of our sins. He went down into the night of our guilt, for only thus can it be transformed. And by giving me authority to forgive sins, he lets me look down into the abyss of man, into the immensity of his suffering for us men, and this enables me to sense the immensity of his love. He confides in me: “No longer servants, but friends.” He entrusts to me the words of consecration in the Eucharist. He trusts me to proclaim his word, to explain it aright, and to bring it to the people of today. He entrusts himself to me. “You are no longer servants, but friends”: These words bring great inner joy, but at the same time, they are so awe-inspiring that one can feel daunted as the decades go by amid so many experiences of one’s own frailty and his inexhaustible goodness.
It's like suddenly looking through a telescope and seeing the universe, after focusing your eyes for too long on the motes of dust in front of your face, kicked up by your own meanderings in the desert.

Girls of the Day - Dexter Version

It's only three months until the season premiere of our favorite show, Dexter.    So it's an opportune time to recap the main "love interests" for Dexter Morgan's serial killer character.   In season one, he met his soon-to-be wife, "Rita," played by the lovely Julie Benz:

In the second season, Dexter was "stepping out" on Rita with a warped (but luscious) British femme fatale, "Lila," played by Jaime Murray:

Finally, in season five, Dexter met a girl who might have been his soulmate, a survivor from an attack by another serial killer, a girl called "Lumen," played by Julia Stiles:

Apparently for season six they've added Molly Parker from Deadwood, which should make things interesting again.

Birthday Today

The only birthday of note today is Frank Loesser, the composer and lyricist for one of my favorite Broadway musicals, Guys and Dolls.   Here is the opening number for the musical (I am a connoisseur of openings to musicals), and I don't know that there's been a better or more distinctive curtain raiser:

An Obvious Correlation

The obvious correlation between economic freedom and per capita income, personal happiness, life expectancy, and other measures of the "good life," is captured in this nice video from the Charles Koch Foundation:

Not as funny though as the Keynes v. Hayek rap contest:

First... Do No Harm

The Hippocratic oath doctors take includes the proscription, "first, do no harm."   The idea is that, if you don't know what to do, doing nothing may be the best course.   That's a hard lesson to learn for anyone, but it seems especially hard to do in the nexus between politics and economics.   Whenever there's an economic downturn, the public clamors for politicians to "do something."   And politicians inevitably do "do something," and the somethings they do often make matters worse.   The most recent example is obvious:   Barack Obama's failed stimulus, a trillion-dollar "something" that made the American economy worse, not better.

On the topic of "doing nothing" as a strategy, here is another interesting article about what Warren Harding did (or, rather, didn't do) in the early 1920s to avoid a deep recession/depression, written from the perspective of Austrian economics.   (It's from the Ludwig von Mises Institute website.)   The recipe (so hard for current politicians) was largely to do nothing and let the market cycle work itself out, with government providing only a stable backdrop of consistent policies.
If the Austrian view is correct — and I believe the theoretical and empirical evidence strongly indicates that it is — then the best approach to recovery would be close to the opposite of these Keynesian strategies. The government budget should be cut, not increased, thereby releasing resources that private actors can use to realign the capital structure.

The money supply should not be increased. Bailouts merely freeze entrepreneurial error in place, instead of allowing the redistribution of resources into the hands of parties better able to provide for consumer demands in light of entrepreneurs' new understanding of real conditions. Emergency lending to troubled firms perpetuates the misallocation of resources and extends favoritism to firms engaged in unsustainable activities at the expense of sound firms prepared to put those resources to more appropriate uses.

This recipe of government austerity is precisely what Harding called for in his 1921 inaugural address.

Financial Armageddon Grows Ever Closer

Like one of those movies where a comet is approaching the earth and will destroy all life on the planet unless some intrepid heroes from central casting find a way to destroy it first.   Here's an alarming article about Social Security's finances.   The takeaways:

  • Since last year, the present value of Social Security’s long-term funding gap widened by $1.1 trillion. In one year.
  • Last year, the trustees reported that Social Security would be unable to pay all of its promised benefits beginning in 2037; now the expected default year is 2036.
  • The year in which Social Security is projected to start running in the red—that is, the year in which it will start adding permanently to the budget deficit—advanced from four years in the future to one year in the past.
And here's an even more alarming article from the Wall Street Journal:

Washington is struggling to make a deal that will couple an increase in the debt ceiling with a long-term reduction in spending. There is no reason for the players to make their task seem even more Herculean than it already is. But we should be prepared for upward revisions in official deficit projections in the years ahead—even if a deal is struck. There are at least three major reasons for concern.

First, a normalization of interest rates would upend any budgetary deal if and when one should occur. At present, the average cost of Treasury borrowing is 2.5%. The average over the last two decades was 5.7%. Should we ramp up to the higher number, annual interest expenses would be roughly $420 billion higher in 2014 and $700 billion higher in 2020....

The second reason for concern is that official growth forecasts are much higher than what the academic consensus believes we should expect after a financial crisis. That consensus holds that economies tend to return to trend growth of about 2.5%, without ever recapturing what was lost in the downturn.

But the president's budget of February 2011 projects economic growth of 4% in 2012, 4.5% in 2013, and 4.2% in 2014. That budget also estimates that the 10-year budget cost of missing the growth estimate by just one point for one year is $750 billion. So, if we just grow at trend those three years, we will miss the president's forecast by a cumulative 5.2 percentage points and—using the numbers provided in his budget—incur additional debt of $4 trillion. That is the equivalent of all of the 10-year savings in Congressman Paul Ryan's budget, passed by the House in April, or in the Bowles-Simpson budget plan.

Third, it is increasingly clear that the long-run cost estimates of ObamaCare were well short of the mark because of the incentive that employers will have under that plan to end private coverage and put employees on the public system. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has already issued 1,400 waivers from the act's regulations for employers as large as McDonald's to stop them from dumping their employees' coverage....

Underestimating the long-term budget situation is an old game in Washington. But never have the numbers been this large.
The perfect storm, which could actually happen, is a combination of interest rates going up to more normal historical levels, anemic growth in the economy, and a brand new entitlement program about which no one knows what to expect, turning out (surprise!) to cost a lot more than the Washington bureaucrats told us it would cost.   The first one is undoubtedly going to happen at some point, and we need to prepare for it.   The second two can be avoided if we elect a Republican Congress and President and repeal Obamacare and, at the same time, lower taxes on individuals and businesses.   Then you might have a chance to get businesses hiring again.

Best Mobile Phone The 3G BlackBerry Curve 9300

The 3G BlackBerry Curve 9300, BlackBerry Latest Product, Blackberyy Mobile Phone
"The 3G Curve 9300 is a traditional-style BlackBerry phone with a Qwerty keyboard high. HSDPA and Wi-Fi are included for quick access to the Internet."

The 3G BlackBerry Curve 9300, as its name suggests, is a 3G enabled phone which is an upgrade of 3G-less phone BlackBerry Curve 8520. We took the city to test its Web browsing capabilities and discover what it had to offer.

What we like

Although crammed into a tiny space, the QWERTY keyboard 3G BlackBerry Curve 9300 is really easy to type on. The keys are quite risen to the surface of the phone so they are not too flush and need a good final push - which helps reduce typing errors. It's really easy to learn and you will be confidently patting texts and emails in no time at all.
The 3G BlackBerry Curve 9300, BlackBerry Latest Product, Blackberyy Mobile Phone

Scanning menus and web pages on the optical trackpad is just as windy. While we generally prefer phones with trackballs, trackpads, as opposed to we were little apprehensive at first. We are pleased to announce that optical trackpad on BlackBerry 3G Curve 9300 works like a charm. There is something rather nice about moving the cursor over the browser using the trackpad, which responds to the slightest of gestures. Selecting text on the browser to copy and paste is a matter for elegant and effortless.

The Web browser loads pages very fast on 3G networks and Wi-Fi. Obviously this is slower in EDGE and GPRS, but not so slow that it becomes a drag. Although the screen size of BlackBerry 3G Curve 9300 is smaller than most smartphones today we have not found web surfing experience to be cramped. You have access to the BlackBerry App World 3G BlackBerry Curve 9300. While applications are generally more expensive compared to those of the iTunes App Store and Android Market, there is always a good selection of applications and games available.

Moving to music on the iPhone BlackBerry 3G Curve 9300 is a simple case of connecting the phone to your computer and transfer music manually. There is a 3.5mm jack too, freeing you to connect any headphones and speakers.

What we don’t like
The 3G BlackBerry Curve 9300 is not the nicest looking device there. It seems sturdy and the rubberized coating on the media keys and volume control is not particularly pleasant to touch. This is in contradiction with the fluidity of the optical trackpad and how quickly and easily, you can type on the BlackBerry Curve 9300 3G, which makes for a strange sensation.

The 3G BlackBerry Curve 9300, BlackBerry Latest Product, Blackberyy Mobile Phone

While we found the browser to be generally correct, we found that some of the images on the sites did not show - we had a lot of those all too familiar red x. Unfortunately, we were not able to track how Facebook and Twitter applications on the BlackBerry Curve 3G CLAIMS 9300. When we tried loading both the applications we trotted in the note "Data connection error" even if we were able to easily surf the web on 3G and Wi-Fi access to BlackBerry App World. We feel this is a problem with our review model.

Although the camera comes with some features (white balance options, black & white, sepia) its a bit dull. There is no flash and it takes a few seconds to process calls only adds to the feeling awkward. Photos also do not look that great on the screen of a BlackBerry Curve 9300 3G.

Conclusion
The BlackBerry Curve 9300 is a 3G BlackBerry cheap but pretty average - it's great for web surfing and typing on, but it feels a bit on the side brickish. The camera is very average and dated, if not a problem for you, we advise you to check on the BlackBerry Bold 9780 instead, which has a more powerful camera.

The Latest Mobiles Popular BlackBerry Bold 9700

"The BlackBerry Bold 9780 is a relatively minor update to the popular BlackBerry Bold 9700."

Ahh, the BlackBerry Bold 9700. It ranks very high among this reviewer preferred mobile phones ever. There is something wonderful Qwerty keyboard and handset design satisfactory. Thus, when the BlackBerry Bold 9780 has been announced, we were obviously very excited, if a little confused. It is so similar to the Bold 9700 - what is the point of it? A minor refresh, it may be, but worth a look in its own right.

What we like

Oh, swoon. The full QWERTY keyboard on the front of the camera is as good as the BlackBerry Bold 9700. It is easy to use keys with an angle sufficient differentiation that once you get used to the disposal of small you tens of typing words per minute. The BlackBerry Bold 9780 ships running BlackBerry OS 6, which we first saw on the BlackBerry 9800 Torch. It gives us access to our favorite applications from the home screen, and a media player and browser updates.

Speaking of which, the browser is excellent. Although the screen is very small compared to most smartphones currently available, the auto-column saves you scrolling through the page to read the full article when zooming in. It also much faster than web browsing case sorry about the permeable version of the OS. The BlackBerry Bold 9780 is also equipped with a camera slightly improved - up to 5 megapixels compared to the BlackBerry Bold 9700 3.2-megapixel affair. The picture quality is slightly better, as you'd expect, and the camera feels a bit faster too.

This is not something we use a lot Recombu here, but some people will appreciate the inclusion of social RSS - a practice built in app that brings together all your social networks - from BlackBerry Messenger to Facebook, Twitter and RSS - all in one place. Although BlackBerry App World is less well stocked as the likes of the Apple App Store and Android Marketplace App, it still offers a good range of quality applications. The real downside is that the BlackBerry applications tend to be much more expensive than those on other platforms.

What we don't like
While we do not always like the design of the BlackBerry Bold 9780 (it is essentially the same as 9700 with some very minor changes), it begins to look a little dated. We looked at the white model, which is quite nice, but the front is suffering from a terrible band black on the back, making it look cheap. The screen is really small compared to today's standards - especially in light of the flame relatively large screen BlackBerry ITEM 3.2

The media is still not surprising - we appreciate the updates to the media player, but it is still not on a par with the iPod system of the iPhone, for example. Capture and video playback is also weak - especially on the tiny screen.

Conclusion
The use of BlackBerry Bold 9780 is a very different experience to use the Bold 9700, so 9700 owners should stick to their combined current and consider something new when it comes to level hours.

But if you are looking for a BlackBerry and do not feel like stylings of the Torch 9800 touch screen, then it is definitely worth a look. With the latest operating system and hardware features that have been optimized to take advantage of the full potential of the software is a solid smartphone with messaging capabilities brilliant.

BlackBerry Curve 8520

RIM noted consumer demand for mobile email and delivered several inexpensive devices that bridge business and consumer worlds. Its latest offering is the budget BlackBerry Curve 8520 that has access social network and a full QWERTY keyboard.
BlackBerry Curve 8520, phone mobiles BlackBerry, Product BlackBerry

What we like

This is not the most advanced social networking centric phone we've seen, but it does give you access to Facebook and Twitter, among others, and email and instant messaging packs too. If you want to stay logged in, but do not want to pay a high price for it, then the 8520 will deliver.

It's not as sexy as the BlackBerry Bold, but not as fragile as a sense of the original Pearl, for example. The Curve's screen is sharp and clear, and the audio is loud and clear through the speakers and headphones. We are pleased to say that there is a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you can use your own boxes.

Apart from the good audio experience, the availability of music is made better by the addition of dedicated music keys at the top of the 8520 that allow you to play and pause tracks, or go forward or backward - even if the 8520 is in your pocket.

RIM BlackBerry after shaky start on the App World is starting to look better and using the years 8520 Wi-Fi, you can download applications with relative ease. We downloaded Viigo, one of our favorite BlackBerry applications, and the process was relatively smooth.

BlackBerry Curve 8520, phone mobiles BlackBerry, Product BlackBerry

What we don't like

It's annoying that there is no 3G or GPS, but we understand RIM wanted to keep costs low so that retailers can sell the 8520 for less. That said, we would like to see a future version of punch brag a little more than downloading content on the go is much nicer when you're rocking 3G.

Instead of a trackball RIM has added a touch sensitive trackpad 8520 that apparently you get used to after a while - we have not. It sounds good, but it's annoying to use in our opinion. Bring the ball please, it might be a bit old now, but it works really well and that's what counts.

While providing the music for the 8520 is its offer great camera is just okay. Its 2-megapixel camera does not take amazing pictures and there is no flash. We also found the 8520's keyboard smaller and harder to press than we would like. The keyboard keys feel tight and we could have done with more space.

BlackBerry Curve 8520, phone mobiles BlackBerry, Product BlackBerry

Conclusion

It is not a high-end phone and it suffers in some areas, but it does deliver when it comes to email, instant messaging and social networking base. We were impressed by the offer of music and we love that it's not as expensive as other BlackBerry devices, but the lack of 3G is a little off.

Latest Mobile Phone Orange Barcelona (Full QWERTY)

Mobile Phone Orange Barcelona, barcelona mobiles, latest mobile

"With a full QWERTY keyboard and useful features like Boost Signal, the Barcelona phone mobiles is a combined business affordable"

After the success of San Francisco, the new handset brand to land in Orange is in Barcelona. With a full QWERTY keyboard black, it looks like I have Rio and Orange II and with its 2.6-inch touch screen it clearly competes BeTouch Acer 210, and of course ChaCha HTC or Blackberry Curve.

Weighing 115g and measuring only 9.9 mm deep, the phone is exceptionally thin, making it the perfect size to slip into a shirt pocket. With the circular four-way controller, other buttons include solid: Menu, Home, Zoom and Back buttons, with call accept and cancel the call. Instead of gingerbread Barcelona runs on Android 2.2 (Froyo), it also includes HD Voice technology for better quality voice calls.

Moreover, the specifications are pretty standard at this price: There is a 3.2 megapixel camera to capture still images and video and make video calls.

Connectivity includes WiFi, Bluetooth and HSDPA. Elsewhere, Barcelona includes UMA Signal Boost is a feature found in many Blackberry. Samsung Touch Screen

There are some great options for touch screen phones for Verizon Wireless. But not every phone is worth a great deal (even if it’s free). This article discusses some of the best touch screen smartphones, and also shows you the best place online to get great deals for both new and existing Verizon customers.

Top Verizon Touchscreen Phones

Verizon has over a dozen touch screen models to choose from. And with Apple’s iPhone becoming available on the Verizon network, it is easy to say they have the best selection in touch screen and smartphones around. Here is a list of the top Verizon phones organized by brand and features.

One main recommendation is to get a Google Android OS-based phone. While comparatively new, it is a proven wireless phone OS, with incredible speed and performance. The Android marketplace of applications will also provide you plenty of entertainment and productiveness tools. All of the phones listed here run on Google Android.
Announced today and apparently not during CES 2008, the new Samsung Touch-Screen F490 looks very interesting from the pictures. The three-band mobile phone features a 3.2-inch display with 262,000 colors, includes a 5 megapixel camera, has 130 MB built-in memory, a microSD card slot and standard 3.5mm jack.Samsung F490 supports HSDPA up to 3.6 Mbps, UMTS 2100, records MPEG4 in QVGA mode at 15fps comes with stereo Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0.

Sounds like a good handset with 115 x 53.5 x 11.8 mm which weighs 102g. No mention on when it’s coming to the US but our sources said that it may be available in Europe first for something around $750 (no contract). See for yourself if it’s a good one.
Samsung Touch screen mobile phones,Offering reviews on latest Samsung Touchscreen Mobile Phones/Cell Phones in India.New low priced pay as you go touch screen phones from the cheapest supplier. Choose from Samsung, LG, Nokia and Sony Ericsson cheap mobile phones.
While everything looks new and shiny and great when displayed in the store, you still have to be cautious of which touchscreen phone you get. Really pay attention to online customer reviews. You could speak with friends and family about their phones, but even then you should take their advice with a grain of salt, depending on how well you know them “as an objective end-user”.

I find that online customer reviews are more “telling”, particularly when several reviews say similar things. This gives you a better idea of what is really great and what is “not-so-great” about a cell phone. Whereas if you get advice from one single person (even from someone you know), it still only represents their one personal viewpoint.

Also remember with Verizon, you have a “14-day Satisfaction Guarantee”, so the first couple weeks, really test out your twist and service. If you have any doubts about the buy of your new phone or service, take reward of this 14-day window. You want to not only get the best deal, but you want to know this will meet and exceed your needs for the next couple years.
Motorola – The Droid models ar a best seller on the Verizon network. The top three Droids are Droid X, Droid Pro and the Droid 2. They ar all similarly in terms of boilersuit features, but the Droid X clearly is the top favorite of the three. The Droid X is solely a touchscreen device, giving it a bigger screen display while remaining fairly comfortable in weight. The Droid Pro has a physical keyboard on the bottom front, while the Droid 2 has a touch screen slider that reveals a full forcible keyboard underneath the touchscreen.
HTC – HTC’s “Incredible” phone is, well… Incredible! While the touchscreen is non as big as the Droid X, the display and resolution is brilliant. And the phone is super fast and well-designed for messaging and social media applications. The major complaint is the short battery life. However many people were satisfied after upgrading to a more powerful battery.
Samsung – They have a couple touchscreen phones that sell very well. The Fascinate and Continuum both run the Android OS platform. The Fascinate is pop for its bright screen, fast performance and the integration of social media applications. Many happy customers amazingly rate the Fascinate higher than the Droid phones.
